Throughout all of my years of school, I was put into the same classroom as my twin sister twelve out of the thirteen years. I am very thankful that my mother had requested it all of those years. It had helped us grow in some areas, like homework, making friends, and never having to deal with the fear of being alone. Although my sister had relied on me a lot, I think that twins should be put in the same classrooms. Our old high school principal wasn’t really a fan of twins being in the same classroom and strongly encouraged that we be separated. My mother refused. There have been laws put into place to eliminate a placement policy for twins. I had pulled from an article written by Nancy L. Segal, professor of Psychology and the director of the Twin Studies Center, “Parents say that despite explaining to school administrators that their twin children work well together, enjoy each other’s company and/or do not wish to enter a new situation on their own, school officials remain unsympathetic.” I’m not sure why there are even rules set by the school because no one besides the parents of the children know the relationship between the set of twins, but it shouldn’t be up to the school to decide whether they are separated or together. The school thinks it helps with learning to be an individual, to which I say they’re wong. I came from a school where girls didn’t get along very well and so my mother wanted us to be together so that we always had someone. The one year that my sister and I were separated was miserable for the both of us. Nancy Segal had also mentioned in her article, “Often they just need to be aware of where the other one is. This is more common among identical than fraternal twins, but can be true of twins of any type.” I think that this is to be true as well. I believe that twins develop this sixth sense after spending time together, especially having a close relationship like me and my sister. The option to be separated or not should be left up to the family itself rather than the school. If a set of twins are more comfortable with each other to be in the same classroom, they should not be separated.
